Abstract

Urban sprawl has a great question mark over the issues of environmental sustainability, infrastructure, and urban resilience. This chapter explains how geospatial technologies (remote sensing, GIS, and spatial modeling) can be used to monitor and manage developments in cities. It discusses the ecological, social, and infrastructural effects of sprawl, taking Muscat, Oman, as an illustrative example, and outlines development-planning concepts of compact cities, smart growth, and eco-friendly modes of transport. Cities can optimize planning needs between development and ecosystem conservation through the incorporation of spatial intelligence in governance and policy frameworks. The chapter highlights the planning and participatory strategies as suitable in ensuring a sustainable, resilient, and livable urban environment in accordance with global sustainability objectives.
