Strategies for Engaging Generation Z Students in Higher Education
Abstract
Generation Z, the cohort born roughly between 1997 and 2012, is reshaping the landscape of higher education. With their digital fluency, social awareness, and desire for meaningful, flexible learning experiences, Gen Z students bring new challenges and opportunities for educators aiming to foster genuine engagement. This chapter explores strategic approaches to engaging Generation Z learners in higher education settings. It begins by examining the defining characteristics of Gen Z and how these traits influence their expectations of education. The chapter then delves into the importance of digital integration, personalized learning, and student autonomy, as well as the need to foster inclusive learning communities and address the growing focus on mental health and well-being. Drawing on current research and practical examples, the chapter offers evidence-based strategies for designing responsive, student-centered educational environments that align with Gen Z's values, habits, and motivations.
