The Use of IsiZulu Folktales and Riddles in Enhancing Language and Critical Thinking Skills for Primary School Learners
Abstract
Folklore is a wide phenomenon among different cultures and languages across the globe. In isiZulu, more particularly, folklore is vital for developing and enhancing language and critical thinking skills, and these are useful for primary school teachers and learners, as learners learn while they enjoy. Language and critical thinking skills are both vital for effective communication and problem-solving. While language skills incorporate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, critical thinking involves analysing information and solving problems. Both these skills are interconnected, and they contribute to the learner's ability to understand and interact with the world effectively. This chapter aims to demonstrate how folktales and riddles can be used as techniques to enhance a primary school learner's language and critical language skills. Such skills play a vital role in the learner's academic achievement throughout their academic life, thus need to be adopted by primary school language teachers for effective teaching.
