Abstract
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is poised to propel a Global China that can reshape the international order. However, the growing threat of radicalization, terrorism, political instability, and the escalation of violence in Afghanistan, Pakistan and China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region pose security threats to South and Central Asian states that are beneficiaries of the BRI. This chapter examines the evolution and the complex interplay between three regional terror actors using Afghanistan and Pakistan for their operations, while exploring how they challenge the BRI. By examining the regional security implications of the BRI and its effect on the current trajectory of conflicts in the region examined, this chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the multifaceted issues that prompt regional Islamist terror groups focusing on China's increasing involvement in the region. This analysis highlights the need to understand the drivers of radicalization and violent extremism in the region and the urgent need for effective counterterrorism measures aimed at deterring one of the greatest evolving threats to international security.
