Levelling Up Language Learning: Strategic Game Integration for Engaging and Effective Instruction
Abstract
This chapter outlines research-informed strategies for integrating game-based learning into language instruction. Informed by constructivist, self-determination, and cognitive load theories, it demonstrates how games can enhance motivation, engagement, and self-regulation. Drawing on a case study of ten participants in rural Mberengwa, it emphasises aligning game mechanics with instructional goals and incorporating culturally responsive elements, such as indigenous games. A framework is proposed for using both digital and non-digital games in diverse contexts, including low-resource settings, supported by the ADDIE model. The chapter also highlights the role of collaboration and competition in language development and offers guidance for teacher professional development.
