Bridging Literacy Gaps Through Culturally-Responsive Game-Based Language Learning in Marginalized Communities
Abstract
This chapter explores the intersection of game-based learning, cultural responsiveness, and literacy development in marginalized communities. Drawing on sociocultural theory and digital pedagogy frameworks, we examine how culturally-responsive game-based interventions can address persistent literacy gaps while honoring students' linguistic and cultural assets. Through analysis of empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, and implementation models, this chapter demonstrates that game-based learning environments, when designed with cultural responsiveness at their core, offer transformative potential for literacy education in underserved populations. We discuss design principles, pedagogical approaches, assessment strategies, and policy implications for scaling culturally-responsive game-based literacy interventions. The chapter concludes with recommendations for researchers, educators, and policymakers seeking to bridge literacy gaps through culturally-sustaining digital pedagogies.
