Abstract
Adventure tourism can be exciting but also brings unforeseeable hazards and challenges, making a dream vacation a nightmarish experience. This study is about the “nightmares” for adventure tourists in Shimla, particularly at “Rohtang,” a very popular and tricky spot that finds its place among the Indian Himalayas. Using secondary data analysis, this research brings forth significant factors for adverse experience which include, but are not limited to, extreme climatic conditions and poor infrastructure, and also includes psychological factors incurred as a consequence of travel at altitude. The study also discusses the role of local governance and emergency services in averting risks and brings to the attention gaps between tourist expectations and what is seen as hard, bitter realities by the tourists. The study also recommends changes in policy making in order to enhance safety standards and emergency preparedness of adventure tourists in highly risky zones, which might in turn benefit the experience overall even for future visitors.
