Improvisational Strategies to Promote Resilience and Adaptability for Online Instruction
Abstract
This chapter offers an analysis of how instructors within higher education settings can leverage improvisational techniques in order to design and manage effective, nimble online professional degree programs and courses which support the unique needs of adult learners, and benefit the institution. This chapter will explore the ways in which online instructors may be seen as facilitators who use mental models of improvisation to energize adult online learning experiences through their teaching and advising practices. The chapter will also examine the elements of effective improvisational leadership, including creativity, emotional intelligence, adaptability, and the capacity to respond to the unexpected with confidence and agility. As the landscape of online professional degree programs rapidly evolves, evidence-based tools and practices of improvisational leadership will be offered to effectively guide instructors through the complexities affiliated with driving positive change and innovation in adult online professional degree programs.
