Abstract
This chapter examines Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model, a student-focused, inquiry-driven approach that overcomes the limitations of conventional physical education methods. Unlike skill-drills, TGfU uses game play to build tactical thinking, decision-making, and contextual learning. Grounded in constructivism, this enhances cognition, motivation, and a deeper comprehension by prompting students to analyze, reflect, and respond to game scenarios. The chapter outlines six fundamental stages of the TGfU framework: game form, game appreciation, tactical awareness, decision-making, skill execution, and performance, all of which foster comprehensive development. Research indicates that TGfU effectively improves not only technical performance but also strategic thinking and enjoyment in sports. TGfU builds motivation and lifelong physical literacy by focusing on meaning-making over rote learning. This chapter positions TGfU as a transformative model for educators aiming to enhance physical education through intentional and engaging teaching methods.
