YouTube and the Presentation of Privacy
Abstract
Privacy has been expressed with concepts such as individuals' private space and confidentiality in the historical process. With the opportunities provided by Web 2.0, it transforms communication and makes publishing and reaching masses extremely easy. The features offered by social media platforms such as participation, content creation, publishing and sharing have made the digital world a center of attraction for individuals. Social media platforms, which are offered for “free”, provide their economy by storing individuals' private life and privacy information and commercializing the attitudes of individuals that enable them to voluntarily disclose their privacy within the platform. On the platform where more views and subscribers mean monetization, users increasingly destroy their privacy in order to attract the attention of the masses. When YouTube and Privacy literature is examined, it is seen that YouTubers try to become famous by publicizing privacy. Privacy is destroyed for the sake of individuals' self-realization and the goal of becoming famous.
