Abstract
Technological advancement has affected various aspects of human life. The existence of technology has made it easier for people, especially for the educational realm. This study aimed to find out what kinds of AI-based writing assistant used by students and the effect of utilizing the tools on students' English academic writing skills. Descriptive qualitative used as the research approach in this study. The participants of the study were 20 students of master's program in English Education who were chosen purposively based on their experience in using AI as an assistant in English academic writing. The instruments employed for this study were questionnaire and semi-structured interview. This study came up with the findings that there are various AI-based writing tools used by the respondents. Interestingly, it is found that using AI-based writing assistant gives not only positive but also the negative impact on the students' academic writing skills. The users of AI writing tools need to be more selective and rely less on the AI writing tools in order to help them enhance not only their English academic writing quality but also writing competences.
