The Role of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in Bridging Digital Literacy Gaps in Higher Education and Workforce Readiness in India
Abstract
The chapter explores the pivotal role of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in addressing the digital literacy gap in India, focusing on their potential to enhance both higher education and workforce readiness. Despite India's strides toward becoming a digital economy, disparities between urban and rural digital literacy rates remain significant, with MOOCs providing a scalable and flexible solution to bridge this gap. The chapter highlights how MOOCs, with their open-access model, can democratize education, offering cost-effective and accessible learning options to students from diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, MOOCs align with industry needs by offering up-to-date training in high-demand fields, making them a key tool in preparing students for a rapidly evolving job market. However, the chapter also acknowledges the challenges of MOOC adoption, such as infrastructure limitations and language barriers, and calls for further investment in digital infrastructure and the inclusion of regional languages to maximize their impact.
