The Intergenerational Transfer of Environmental Knowledge and Leadership
Abstract
The intergenerational transfer of environmental knowledge and leadership is crucial for sustainable ecological practices and climate resilience. This chapter explores how traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) from elders, combined with modern scientific understanding, fosters effective environmental stewardship. It examines the mechanisms of knowledge transfer, the roles of youth and elders, and the barriers that hinder this exchange, such as language loss and cultural marginalization. Emerging trends, including the use of technology, youth-led movements, and the revival of TEK, are reshaping the landscape of environmental leadership. The chapter also highlights the importance of policy and institutional support in facilitating knowledge transfer across generations. Recommendations focus on enhancing education, promoting intergenerational dialogue, and fostering community-based environmental projects. By fostering collaboration between generations, societies can strengthen environmental leadership and ensure sustainable development.
