Teaching Out: A Search for Safety and Identity
Abstract
This chapter makes the argument that, for queer teachers, the pursuit of educational spaces where one's personal and professional identities are safe to be fully authentic ultimately leads to the college teaching and learning space. This argument is illustrated through examples from the author's life where the merging of identities was not possible either through a lack of safety in being an out-of-the-closet gay man or stifled identity as a teacher. The chapter provides support from queer educational researchers and meaningful data on the realities of the places and spaces where queer teachers may teach and where they may want to teach.
