Perceived Emotional Intelligence in AI-Driven Interactions: A Human-Centered Conceptual Framework
Abstract
Emotional intelligence in AI-driven environments has become crucial from both a conceptual and practical standpoints as AI mediates human interaction more frequently. This chapter presents a human-centered conceptual framework that reframes emotional intelligence as a perceived and relational phenomenon that arises through human–AI interaction, rather than as a purely technical competence of AI systems. The chapter explains how AI emotional capabilities impact emotional expression, trust formation, emotional bonding, and relationship quality through perceived emotional intelligence by integrating theories of emotional intelligence, social presence, human–AI interaction, and relationship development. In order to promote long-lasting and human-centered AI-mediated connections, it also critically examines ethical and societal issues such as emotional manipulation, dependency, authenticity, and emotional data governance. Finally, it provides recommendations for responsible AI design and future study.
