Abstract

Innovation is a crucial factor for competitive advantage and business sustainability in today's dynamic market. The intersection of innovation strategies and performance has become a critical point for organizations. This study aims to explore the relationship between innovation types/practices and innovation performance, in the face of grand innovation challenges. Portuguese firms need to cope with these challenges, as the backbone of the country's economy. The results show that co-creation, where users participate in product/service development, has the strongest correlation with turnover from new-to-market innovation. This suggests that addressing the grand challenges requires participatory approaches where users, communities, and organizations collaborate for impactful solutions. Government is taking a decisive step to strengthen the national industrial fabric and encourage innovation-driven growth. However, policies must consider a good coordination of key players' linkages committed to strategic industrial development based on collaboration and sustainable competitiveness.
