Abstract
The chapter discusses the implications that social media age has on modern political and social processes, examines dangers of disinformation and fake news, and analyses different approaches to countering them. Social media literacy is considered as one of the key tools to respond to the perils of false information on social media platforms, by giving users competences and skills to discern between facts and falsehood. Different concepts in literature and overview of relevant research on the topic are reviewed. The chapter concludes the discussion with the considerations on the so called “post-truth” era and offers recommendations for steps forward, both in countering negative effects of disinformation, and in possible future research on social media literacy.
