Unhappy Workplaces Are Like Unhappy Marriages: Relationship Research and Workplace Wellness
Abstract
Wellbeing at work is significantly dependent on trustworthy workplace relationships however, research indicates workplace incivility is increasing across diverse industries. Employment and marriage have similarities, as the quality of both sets of relationships are central to wellbeing. Comparing research regarding the impediments to workplace wellbeing and factors that lead to divorce demonstrate contemptuous behaviours are among the most destructive in work and personal life. Dr John Gottman's extensive research regarding the predictors of divorce offers important information to respond to and effectively redress workplace relationship dysfunction and uncivil conduct. Gottman's' work has been replicated into a model and strategy for assessing risk and repair for sound workplace relationships. A case study demonstrates how this model can help address complex organisational conflicts that have increased incivility and diminished employee wellbeing. Applying this research can inform a strategic framework to measure the requirements for workplace relationships that support wellbeing.
