The Psychological Rewards of Online Self-Disclosure
Abstract
This chapter is aimed to address a very common phenomenon in which many online users voluntarily disclose their personal information, while knowing that such self-disclosure could jeopardize privacy. The concern about privacy invasion and the urge to disclose personal information seem to be at odds, but research suggests that the privacy concern does not really deter or mitigate people's desire to share personal information online. In this chapter, we look into the psychological rewards that encourage or entice people into self-disclosure despite the risks. Considering in some countries self-disclosure could actually lead to legal ramifications or government suppression, the psychological rewards must be significant enough to motivate such behavior. Of course, there can be other types of rewards, such as monetary gains, but this chapter focuses on the psychological aspects.
