The Planet is Online: How can Digitally Unlock Conscious Consumption?
Abstract
This chapter delves into the evolving role of digital platforms in shaping more environmentally responsible consumption practices. Drawing on a systematic review of 35 peer-reviewed articles, it maps the main ways in which platforms are both enabling and constraining the shift towards conscious consumption. Rather than offering a linear view, the analysis uncovers a complex web of interactions—between technologies, behaviours, values and narratives—that influence how people engage with sustainability in digital environments. Four thematic clusters emerge, revealing how value co-creation, innovation in food systems, social participation and platform-mediated experiences intersect in unexpected ways. While the potential for transformation is real, so are the tensions: from greenwashing to algorithmic bias, from user empowerment to digital exclusion. By proposing an integrative framework, the chapter invites reflection on how platforms might not only support but actively cultivate more meaningful, inclusive and ethical consumption journeys in the years to come.
