The Dynamics of Global Trade Under Protectionism and Populism: A Comparative Study of United States and India
Abstract
Two of the world's largest democracies United States and India have a robust and progressing trade partnership, which has deepened over the years. This paper investigates the evolving dynamics of their global trade under the influence of protectionism and populism. In recent years both the countries are focusing more on their national interests and economic self reliance, rather than heavily relying on global trade or free market globalisation. However there is an increased skepticism towards liberal economic globalisation, because both the nations have witnessed drastic political and economic shifts driven by the populist leaders and their strategic directives. This research takes on a comparative approach on exploring the political economy of both the nations. This study underlines how domestic political narratives shape international trade participation, through scrutinizing key trade policies, institutional rhetoric and economic data related to the shifts in government both India (from 2014-2024) and U.S (from 2018-2024).
