Substance Use Counseling Among Men: Challenges Before, During, and After Sessions
Abstract
This chapter explains the process of substance use counseling for male clients. Counseling for substance use among men is crucial to discuss due to the high prevalence of substance use among men compared to women worldwide. Men experience a “silent pandemic” related to substance use. Unfortunately, men face many challenges in seeking help through the counseling process. Stigma and entrenched ideologies of masculinity around men have hindered them from seeking assistance. Moreover, men also face challenges in expressing their feelings, thoughts, and conditions during substance use counseling sessions. Outside the sessions, men also confront the reality that social support or even family acceptance may be something they need to fight for. In general, this chapter seeks to make counselors and practitioners involved in the substance use recovery process more sensitive to these various challenges. The hope is that the planning of counseling sessions as an integrated part of the recovery process can be more optimally executed.
