Seizures in Head Injury Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study
Abstract
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) significantly increases the risk of post-traumatic seizures (PTS), and their long-term implications on neurological health and quality of life. While global evidence shows a seizure incidence of 10–25% following moderate to severe TBI, regional evidence from Pakistan, particularly from tertiary care institutions, is sparse. In order to determine the incidence and patterns of seizures in head-injured patients presented to a tertiary care facility in Pakistan, with implications for their early diagnosis and management. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the Neurosurgical Ward of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Karachi Medical and Dental College, Karachi, Pakistan, for a duration of six months. A sample of 140 patients aged 1–60 years with established head injuries was assessed for the occurrence of seizures, type of seizure, and timing (immediate, early, or late). Clinical assessment was supplemented with radiological investigations (CT, MRI) and follow-up of patients.
