Reclaiming Higher Education Through Coalition and Community
Abstract
It is time that institutions of higher education learn from what the public schools have undergone. Climb down from the tower, get on the ground, and start a grassroots movement! Use the relationships and varied areas of expertise that fill college campuses and make something happen. Look beyond the current fights – arguments about first amendment rights on campus, a push for online course programs that compete with traditional colleges and universities, narratives about higher education costs and usefulness of degrees, attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, etc. – are not exactly what they seem. These arguments are meant to bait and distract audiences and obscure very real intentions around privatizing, deregulation, power, and control. It is time to start reimagining the response. The upheaval is well-documented, so perhaps it is time to shift focus on to “what now?”.Let us look to something generative and hopeful: build a coalition and seek to incorporate more community oriented (and less market oriented) tactics in the fight to save our higher education systems.
