Qualitative Instrumentation Field Tests and Expert Panel Reviews: A Focus on the Multidimensional Addiction Behaviour Scale (MABS) for Dissertation Research
Abstract
This chapter explores the essential methodologies of qualitative instrumentation field tests and expert panel reviews in dissertation research. It outlines the definitions and roles of qualitative instruments, the planning and execution of field tests, and the analysis of field test data. The chapter also covers organizing and analyzing expert panel reviews, synthesizing feedback, face validation and refining instruments. Highlighting the importance of these methodologies demonstrates how field tests provide practical insights, and expert reviews offer theoretical critique, ensuring the reliability and validity of research tools. The expert's validation of the Multidimensional Addiction Behaviour Scale (MABS) demonstrated the importance of experts' input in refining measurement tools. Removing certain items and dimensions and restructuring the items for scale improved focus and effectiveness, highlighting the need for iterative refinement and ongoing validation in addiction research. This chapter equips dissertation students with essential methodologies for validating research.
