Psychosocial Development for Children and Adolescents Exhibiting Aggressive Behaviour
Abstract
Aggressive behaviour in children and adolescents is a multifaceted problem with potentially severe consequences for individuals and society. The present chapter aims to provide a comprehensive literature review, examining the psychosocial dimensions of aggression that contribute to aggressive tendencies, highlighting the early onset and distinct developmental patterns during childhood and adolescence. It also emphasises the detrimental effects of factors such as difficult temperament, parenting style, bullying, social rejection, and hostile attribution bias. It explores the severe consequences of untreated aggression, including academic failure, social isolation, mental health problems, and increased risk of crime and violence. Finally, this chapter advocates evidence-based prevention strategies and interventions targeting individual, family, and social factors to reduce aggressive behaviour. Promising approaches include cognitive-behavioural therapy, parent education programs, and social skills training, fostering positive behaviour change for a safer society.
