Navigating the Landscape of Qualitative Research in Doctoral Studies: Methodologies, Design, and Implementation
Abstract
This chapter provides a clear and detailed approach to understanding the methodologies crucial for the completion of doctoral research. It briefly describes thematic analysis, grounded theory, and narrative inquiry, focusing on the role of these qualitative research approaches in a doctoral research study. It guides the need for research questions to align with the qualitative methods choices to arrive at valid and credible results is a key message in the chapter. The guidelines help doctoral investigators understand the basic principles of making and calibrating qualitative research instruments and point to the necessity of field tests and expert reviews. In addition, the chapter undertakes a discussion on ways of increasing data trustworthiness for credibility, dependability as well as confirmability – all of which are vital aspects that pertain to the issue of transferability. It also addresses explorations of qualitative data analysis techniques, computer-assisted qualitative data analysis systems, and data visualization.
