Abstract

This chapter delves into religious tourism as a subset of spiritual tourism, exploring how innovative principles are applied to develop and enhance religious tourism destinations and experiences. The chapter begins by defining religious tourism and providing an overview of its historical and cultural significance. The chapter showcases examples of how innovative tourism initiatives have leveraged local religious heritage and narratives to create compelling tourism offerings. The chapter also explores regulatory and ethical considerations, emphasizing the importance of respecting religious practices and sites. The chapter then explores the role of innovative ecosystem in promoting the personalized experience of tourists in religious tourism. The chapter primarily focuses its attention on four major religious and heritage cities of Northern India, namely Mathura, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj. The Kumbh event management of Prayagaraj and provided facilities, amenities, and construction of new temple of Lord Rama in Ayodhya provides personalize experience to tourists.
