Abstract

Chapter 6 examines the significance of social media; its effects and pivotal role in shaping public opinion. This became especially apparent during the George Floyd incident, when Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes, as bystanders stood by, witnessing the incident in disbelief. Cellphones were used to capture video footage of the incident, instantly broadcasting the interaction between Floyd and Chauvin to a global audience before any news network had become aware of the event. The video post quickly went viral, drawing widespread reactions of disbelief, anger, and calls for protest.
