Caught Between Career and Caregiving: Unpacking the Sociological Dynamics of Toxic Workplaces for Working Parents
Abstract
This chapter examines the significant challenges faced by working parents who must balance their professional responsibilities with family obligations in today's society. In particular, the chapter discusses how toxic work environments—marked by negativity, hostility, and high stress—exacerbate these challenges by adversely affecting the well-being of employees. When employees are continually pushed beyond their limits without adequate support or recognition, it can result in a toxic workplace where employees feel perpetually overwhelmed and undervalued. Additionally, the chapter addresses the role of societal norms and organizational structures in intensifying these challenges, particularly through traditional gender roles that unequally distribute caregiving and professional responsibilities between men and women. The chapter highlights the complex interplay between professional and personal life, advocating for systemic changes to better support working parents in achieving a sustainable balance.
