Abstract

Since the Second World War, the profession of prosthetics/orthotics has undergone a marked evolution, with government and university support for training, research and the creation of aids. Prosthetics and orthotics (P&O) are often cited to describe transformative technology in healthcare. From exoskeletons to microprocessor-controlled parts, sensors and 3D printing (additive manufacturing) (Raschke, 2022), this discipline is constantly evolving. In this context, prosthetists/orthotists are encouraged to be informed consumers of research findings. They need to be trained and prepared for the evidence based practice (EBP) process. Indeed, by integrating scientific research data with the practitioner's training and experience, evidence-based practice (EBP) aims to guide therapeutic decision-making (Geil, 2009). This chapter reviews the barriers to the adoption of EBP by prosthetists/orthotists and proposes recommendations for optimizing this culture in the P&O discipline.
