Abstract
In pharmaceutical applications, ionic liquids (ILs) have become a revolutionary class of materials, especially in drug delivery systems. They are excellent options for boosting transdermal drug transport and boosting bioavailability due to their adjustable physicochemical characteristics, that includes high solubility, thermal stability, and biocompatibility. Each of the four generations of ILs has improved drug solubility, decreased toxicity, and increased biodegradability. By acting as chemical permeation enhancers, they help transport medications that aren't highly soluble in water, increasing therapeutic effectiveness and reducing systemic side effects. Furthermore, ILs have been extensively investigated as environmentally friendly solvents, catalysts, and stabilizers that can replace volatile organic chemicals in drug synthesis, extraction, and purification procedures. Their versatility in the biological sciences is demonstrated by their promise for antibacterial applications, protein stability, and cancer therapy.
