Advanced Transportation Technologies for Next-Generation Logistics
Abstract
The chapter will focus on the disruptive aspects of using AI, IoT, Robotics, and Blockchain in transportation today. With the world facing increasing supply chain challenges caused by urbanism, climate change, and technological disruption, smart logistics are providing avenues of increasing efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. It gives a conceptual summary, discusses its applications in road, maritime, and air transport, and is supplemented with case studies. The main themes identified are intermodal integration, digitalization of the supply chain, and significant barriers to implementation, which are cost, cybersecurity, and regulatory problems. Future enablers and emerging technologies such as digital twins, edge AI, and 6G can therefore be identified. The chapter ends with strategic recommendations to policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers by giving a stepwise process by which the digital transformation of logistics in the 21st century can be examined.
