Safeguarding Ethics and Academic Integrity in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence: A Case Study on Plagiarism Prevention
Abstract
This chapter examines the evolving challenges to academic integrity posed by the integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education. Focusing on a case study of plagiarism prevention at a university, the chapter explores how AI's dual role as both a tool for enhancing research and a potential source of academic dishonesty necessitates a robust ethical framework. It discusses the importance of institutional support, advanced detection software, and continuous education on ethical research practices. By highlighting the collaboration between ethics committees, libraries, and research networks, the chapter underscores the need for universities to rigorously enforce academic integrity policies while adapting to the rapidly changing digital landscape. Ultimately, this chapter provides insights into the balance required between leveraging AI's capabilities and preserving the core principles of academic honesty and originality in scholarly work.
