On Standby: China, Curiosity, and the Courage to Face the Unknown
Abstract
This chapter traces the transformative experience of a Honduran American architecture student studying abroad at Wenzhou-Kean University in China, revealing how immersion in an unfamiliar culture can redefine identity, purpose, and perspective. Through encounters that blend discomfort with discovery, it explores how curiosity evolves into courage and adaptability. The narrative interweaves themes of intercultural connection, academic growth, and emotional resilience, illustrating how navigating new languages, friendships, and environments nurtures a deeper understanding of global citizenship. From the studio to the streets of Wenzhou, each experience becomes a lesson in openness and reflection. Ultimately, this chapter demonstrates that stepping into the unknown is not merely an act of travel, but an act of becoming, unpacking what it means to grow, connect, and find belonging in a world far from home.
