Artificial Intelligence, Innovation, and Safety in Biotechnology Research
Abstract
Biotechnology research covers different disciplines of life that utilise biological products and systems for scientific research to create innovative products and solutions in industries such as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental management. However, biotechnology research poses challenges of products and workforce safety. Hence, the need for intentional efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into biotechnology research. This chapter considers the impacts of AI innovation on safety in biotechnology-based agriculture, medicine, environment, and food research areas. AI-driven training programs can markedly improve staff productivity, talent management, and individualised learning experiences. Predictive analytics techniques can confidently assess workplace risk, thereby significantly improving safety. However, non-existent ethical considerations, regulatory frameworks, and intellectual property rights challenges beset effective integration of AI and must be addressed via relevant established stakeholder regulations and ethical practices.
