Women in Higher Education: Tenure and Promotion
Abstract
This chapter explores the impact of tenure and promotion on the personal and professional experiences of women in higher education. It delves into the historical context and evolution of the tenure system, examines gender disparities in the early tenure processes and the evolution of promotion criteria. It also analyzes contemporary tenure and promotion structures in higher education, focusing on the role of peer review, the balance between research, teaching, and service, and the impact of gender bias. It discusses the specific challenges women face, including work-life balance issues, mentorship and networking deficits, and the intersectionality of diverse experiences among women faculty members. The chapter underscores the importance of institutional policies and programs in supporting women in academia. The chapter advocates for a comprehensive and nuanced approach to address the complex challenges women face, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to create an inclusive academic environment where all faculty members have equal opportunities to succeed.
