Understanding the Research Onion and Its Application in Educational Leadership and Management Research: Making Use of Saunders' Research Model
Abstract
This literature-based study aimed to improve educational leadership and management using the Research Onion framework. It addressed challenges such as fragmented methodologies, lack of contextual analysis, and limited inclusivity in leadership practices. Findings support the use of mixed-methods (pragmatism) and critical realism to enhance theory and practice. Practical implications include adopting data-driven, evidence-based leadership strategies tailored to school needs. Policy recommendations urge alignment of leadership training with empirical evidence and promotion of inclusive, equity-focused practices. Future research should explore leadership during crises, its effect on teacher retention, cross-cultural applications, and the long-term impact of leadership styles. A framework for distributed leadership is also recommended. The study offers theoretical, practical, and policy insights to guide leadership development in education.
