Time Travel Method: An Interdisciplinary Approach in Teaching and Learning of Social Studies at Junior School in Kenya
Abstract
The chapter explores teaching methodologies for social studies instruction. Time travel method is presented as one of the pedagogies which can contribute to the development of 21st competencies among learners for informative and transmotive workforce and citizenry. Its participatory, hands on approach and community engagement makes it valuable at Junior school level. The chapter contends that though the method was initially meant to teach history, it can be applied to social studies, which is interdisciplinary in nature. The method exposes the learners to live encounters in the immediate environment, making learning alive, fun and memorable. The presentation demonstrates how the method can be applied in the teaching of sub-strands in social studies curriculum design. Across social studies grades (7.8.and 9). It is evident that if used well it can engage students both in the classroom and in the historic environments near the schools and beyond. Its interdisciplinary appeal makes it a relevant method not only in social studies but across the curriculum.
