Abstract

This chapter explores solid waste management challenges in rural tourism areas, highlighting factors that increase waste generation. It contrasts the unique composition of rural waste, rich in organic matter and bulky items, with urban waste. Key influences include tourist demographics, consumption patterns, and accommodation choices, leading to varying waste types and quantities. Rural areas often face infrastructure and resource limitations, financial constraints, and a dispersed population, hindering effective waste management. Awareness gaps among residents and tourists about waste practices and weak enforcement of regulations exacerbate these issues. The chapter advocates for waste segregation at the source, on-site composting, and effective recycling programs. Researchers collect primary data via questionnaires in rural India to analyze and provide insights. The chapter concludes by stressing sustainable waste management's importance for the long-term viability of rural tourism, urging collaboration among stakeholders.
