Abstract
This chapter investigates language education in prisons as a component of prisoners' right to education. Its aim is to explore the contribution of language education to their social reintegration as well as the factors that influence its effectiveness. A case study at a Second Chance School in a Greek male prison used interviews and questionnaires to analyze the difficulties of this educational setting and the advantages of language education for participants. The research showed that prisoners who participate in prison school programs gain multiple advantages including improved communication abilities and enhanced self-confidence. Simultaneously, significant challenges were recognized, including the student populations' heterogeneity as a result of the presence of different nationalities, and tight prison rules that limit the educational process. Overall, language education appears to have a favorable impact, however its efficacy is affected by various conditions.
