The Philippines: Strategic Corridor in China's Belt and Road Vision
Abstract
This case study examines the evolution of Sino-Philippine relations into a multidimensional, mutually beneficial partnership. It analyzes how historical ties and formal diplomatic relations since 1975 have expanded into cooperation across trade, infrastructure, finance, agriculture, energy, and culture. Economically, the study highlights China's role as the Philippines' largest trading partner, the impact of RCEP and the Belt and Road Initiative, and risk-sharing financial models that support infrastructure such as the Binondo–Intramuros Bridge and Wawa Pumped Storage Power Station. It evaluates development and poverty-reduction initiatives, including hybrid rice and banana projects, as well as growing collaboration in renewable energy and climate resilience. Cultural, educational, tourism, and media exchanges are shown to strengthen people-to-people ties. The study also assesses challenges, arguing that institutional innovation and inclusive engagement are key to sustainable future cooperation.
