The Essay Is Dead (And Other Thoughts About Assessing in the Era of AI)
Abstract
This chapter explores the profound impact of recent revolutionary AI advancements on traditional assessment methods, particularly the take-home essay. The authors argue that the rise of AI-generated content challenges the efficacy and integrity of conventional writing assignments. Educators are urged to reconsider their assessment strategies in such a way that integrates AI tools in ways that enhance critical thinking and learning outcomes. By adapting assignments to incorporate AI-generated responses and emphasizing evaluation and synthesis, educators can maintain academic rigor and better prepare students for the evolving demands of the working world. This approach not only mitigates the risks associated with AI use in education but also leverages its potential to foster deeper engagement and understanding among students.
