The Economic Impact of Autonomous Systems and Robotics on the Labor Market in the Logistics Sector: A Three-Dimensional Examination
Abstract
his chapter, provides a comprehensive, three-dimensional examination of the economic impact of autonomous systems and robotics on the labor market within the logistics sector. The authors explore the multifaceted nature of this transformation, analyzing the simultaneous processes of job displacement and workforce evolution. The chapter first delineates the theoretical foundations of automation's impact, contrasting the displacement effect which highlights job losses in routine tasks—with the productivity effect, which emphasizes economic growth and new job creation. This is followed by a detailed economic analysis that examines the trade-off between the high capital investments required for automation and the substantial, long-term operational efficiencies and cost reductions achieved. This section highlights how automation drives down per-order labor costs, increases throughput rates, and improves safety and space utilization.
