Abstract

This chapter will discuss the manner in which the Arab-Israeli conflict is rooted in religion and culture relating to the main narratives of Jews and Arabs forming the basis of the two opposing national movements. It was also relate to some key ideological debates concerning the early encounters between Zionist Jews intent on rebuilding the Jewish homeland and the existing Palestinian Arab population. The approaches of “Brit Shalom” aimed at fostering Arab-Jewish amity and cooperation and the orientation of Zev Jabotinsky advocating the “iron wall” to deter violent Arab opposition to the building of a Jewish homeland in Palestine are juxtaposed. These two poles in effect represent the two main constrasting (Jewish) policy perspectives regarding the conflict. The chapter also offers an overview of key milestones in the Arab-Israeli conflict, from the late 19th century to the recent Abraham Accords meant to provide a context for better appreciating aspects of culturally based Jewish-Arab efforts at dialogue and peacebuilding in the coming chapters.
