Abstract

Storytelling is not just an efficient method of teaching languages, but it is also a tool that gives learners the opportunity to narrate their own experiences. The art of storytelling gives migrant learners the opportunity to empower their representation using prior knowledge and make connections in their new contexts to develop their language skills and understanding of the world. Through an exploratory literature review, this chapter addresses a significant gap in scholarly discussion examining the use of storytelling in language classrooms. The authors explore storytelling as a tool for migrant learners' developing language skills, practicing healing, and constructing their identities. Grounded in literature on migrant learners, this chapter informs educators and practitioners about the pedagogical practice of storytelling as a learner-centered approach in teaching language classrooms. The authors consider the challenges of implementing storytelling in teaching literacy and offer practical solutions and recommendations while consulting different theories and drawing connections.
