Abstract

With the evolution of the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem into an interconnected network of vehicles, charging infrastructure, energy grids, and digital platforms, interoperability is paramount to efficiency, scalability, and user experience. This research work presents the standards and communication protocols, existing and emerging, that guarantee interoperability of smart EV systems. With global standards such as ISO 15118 and OCPP to newly emerging protocols facilitating vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration, we explore the technological evolution and its importance in facilitating seamless communication across varied platforms. The book chapter further identifies critical challenges associated with standardization. It outlines the frameworks within which global harmonization may be encouraged, with a view to adopting innovation and accelerating uptake in the field.
