Abstract

Women are disproportionately affected by autoimmune diseases, comprising 80% of those diagnosed. These diseases are especially prevalent among women of childbearing age, individuals with a family history, those exposed to certain environmental factors, and specific racial and ethnic groups. There are over 80 known types of autoimmune diseases, which occur when the body attacks its own tissues and organs. The stress of pursuing a career in higher education can exacerbate these conditions, highlighting the need for effective support systems. In this conceptual chapter, the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is used as a model of support for women in higher education living with autoimmune diseases, helping them navigate leadership and promotion opportunities. ACT, a mental health intervention focused on psychological flexibility and stress reduction, combines mindfulness with behavior change strategies. Practical strategies to create a more inclusive environment and the need for further research into institutional support for these women are discussed.
