Searching for Kentucky Cultural Values Through the Reflection of Korean Cinderella Folktale Comparison: 5th Grader Journeys to Define Their Own Cultural Value
Abstract
Folktales allow students to learn traditions, values, and beliefs of people that are divergent of their own, resulting in broader understanding, acceptance, and a stronger embrace for diversity. 5th graders at eastern KY area completed comparative Cinderella story activity. The students explored the cultures represented in Korean Cinderella and searched for their own Kentucky culture and values through web engines. Small group graphic organizers, use of a tablet device, narrative writing, group discussion and the class presentations were utilized. The results suggested that students were able to identify cultural elements represented in the folktales, interpret them, and compare them to their own culture. The significance of this study with digital integration played a significant role in defining authenticity of cultural values and practices, and bridging the theory practice gap using comparative folktales to teach own cultural understanding in a rural Kentucky area.
