Abstract
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education is altering teaching and requires educators to develop new competencies. Through a systematic review of 247 articles published between 2022 and 2024, this chapter explores three major themes, namely, AI and Teacher Competency Development, Challenges in Reskilling and Upskilling, and Strategies for Effective Reskilling. It has become evident that educators have to acquire digital literacy, data analytics skills, and AI-specific pedagogical strategies, with a corresponding need to address ethical concerns around algorithmic bias, data privacy, and equity of access. Moreover, institutional resistance, inequitable digital literacy, and especially the fast evolution of AI, which outpaces often existing training frameworks, are identified as evolving major concerns. This chapter, therefore, proposes to embed AI training into continuous professional development, enhance interdisciplinary collaborations, and adapt frameworks such as P21, TPACK, and DigCompEdu to the specific needs of AI.
